World Toilet Organization put out a post at the end of last month announcing the launch of the world’s first World Toilet College in India!

We’ve written a bunch on this site about community-led endeavors to improve sanitation and it’s effectiveness and it warms the heart to see WTO take this proven logic to the next level. Training, education, manufacturing, informing mechanical and human design – WTC India is on a mission:

“In order to tackle poor sanitation, we need to ensure that professionals are trained in the required skills and knowledge, including the design of toilets, technology, building toilets, cleaning and maintenance, eco-sanitation, waste management, and setting up sanitation social enterprises.”

We especially like that they are not limiting the scope of these training to heavily populated urban environments and that they are putting equal importance on the rural environments as well.

The first class, “Community Training of Sanitation Ambassadors”, held in March at WTC India’s campus in Rishikesh got off to a beautiful start with almost 50 students attending! The training they will be receive is vital to the over all dire sanitation situation that currently exists in India.

We here at abettertoilet.org salute and encourage this endeavor and look forward to watching WTC India flourish and succeed!
